Flash Back Fast Forward
Flashback: Reflections on the Artist Residencies at the Bridderhaus in 2024
The year 2024 was marked by a series of exceptional artist residencies, where creators forged stimulating connections between their works and the architectural, social, and cultural realities of the city. The two themes guiding these residencies were Playtime and Vernacular Spectacular. Playtime explored the influence that an artistic project can have on the architecture and urbanity of a city, while Vernacular Spectacular highlighted local specificities and the particularities of urban architectures.
All of this research will be presented at the Bridderhaus on March 1st, starting at 2 PM. The program includes residency presentations, performances, an interactive talk, and workshops, offering an opportunity to discover and engage with the projects that defined 2024. Beyond revisiting last year’s projects, the event also looks ahead. With a "fast forward" approach, it emphasizes upcoming dynamics, inviting new artists and institutions.
Participants: Lars Neugebauer, Alfredo Barsuglia, Andrea Pichl, Alix Van Ripato & Marcin Sobolev, Andrea Zsutty, Olga Maximova and Emilie Hirayama and CanTouchThis.

Program Details
• 2 PM - 5 PM | WORKSHOP | Suminagashi | CanTouchThis & Emilie Hirayama
Discover "Suminagashi," the ancient Japanese art of marbling that dates back over 1,000 years. Meaning 'floating ink,' Suminagashi involves gently placing ink on the surface of water and manipulating it to create fluid and intricate patterns. Originally used to decorate books and scrolls, this meditative art form captures the delicate balance between control and spontaneity. In this workshop, you will explore the history and technique of Suminagashi by drawing on water and adding sound to enhance the experience. Each participant will create and print their own unique design to take home as a keepsake. Workshop for adults (children accompanied by an adult).
• 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM | TALK: Art & Play: Alfredo Barsuglia and Andrea Zsutty (Zoom Kindermuseum) in conversation
30 years ago, the ZOOM Children’s Museum began its work with the desire to create a cultural and artistic program for and with children on an equal footing. Located in its own building, centrally positioned in one of Europe’s largest cultural districts, the museum quickly established the intersection of art and play as its unique hallmark.
With "Art & Play," the interactive exhibition celebrating the museum’s 30th anniversary, ZOOM makes its core principles tangible for children aged 6 to 12 through a multisensory experience, offering diverse ways to play in an artistically designed hands-on scenography.
For example, Alfredo Barsuglia, with his expansive, walk-in sculpture KINSEL, opens up the many possibilities of free play right at the beginning of the exhibition: full of imagination and creativity, children can explore hideouts via "rolling boats," be reminded of the beginnings of art in the "scratch cave"—a nod to cave paintings—or investigate a cargo hold with hidden corners. High up on a ship’s deck, KINSEL offers viewing points and even a beach villa. Physical activity is encouraged with fitness equipment, while dexterity is tested in paper airplane folding contests. The ambiguity of art is also reflected in the anamorphosis of the word "ART". It can only be read in its entirety from a specific point on the KINSEL.
• 5:50 PM - 6 PM | PERFORMANCE II | Lars Neugebauer | "Paradies, Schutt und Asche" II
In the performance "Paradies, Schutt und Asche II," the industrial sounds of the past merge with the present. A space where musical, acoustic, and visual connections emerge, transforming into rhythm-dominated soundscapes.
• 6:30 PM – 6:50 PM | PERFORMANCE | PAINT AND SOUND | Olga Maximova and Emilie Hirayama

• 2 PM - 5:30 PM | Andrea Pichl
Andrea Pichl (lives and works in Berlin) engages with architecture and design issues, particularly those of the postmodern era. This includes social housing complexes as well as grids, fences, and decorative elements from exterior spaces, and doors, textiles, and carpets from interiors. These anonymously designed forms define, shape, or limit space but are often barely noticeable due to their inconspicuousness. Based on her research, Pichl develops installations, sculptures, drawings, and photographs. Through strategies of appropriation and transference, the artist draws the viewers’ attention to individual parts, fragments, or excerpts.
During her residency in May and June 2024, Andrea Pichl explored these very aspects through long walks in Esch and its surroundings. She is presenting numerous photographs from this investigation as part of the Flashback Event.
• 2 PM - 08 PM | Lars Neugebauer
"Paradies, Schutt und Asche" | Esch, a city where the industrial past still pulses within the walls of old factories. Here, where the sound of machines meets the echoes of days gone by, the music-art project "Paradise, Rubble, and Ashes" takes shape. A project that reflects the dual nature of this city: on the one hand, the monumental legacy of industry, and on the other, the stories hidden in the shadows of these monuments.
• 2 PM - 8 PM | Alix Van Ripato & Marcin Sobolev
Nishiōji – the audio tape | Nishiōji is both a painted metal sculpture installed in the garden of the Bridderhaus and a proposition for ambient music. This dual project was developed during the artistic residency of Alix Van Ripato and Marcin Sobolev from January to March 2024. The sound project is an invitation to disorientation through sensory immersion. A journey built from sounds collected and recorded in the streets of Kyoto, it allows us to dream by giving a voice to the various elements of the sculpture.
These pieces of music take the form of a vintage-style audio cassette: a cardboard sleeve reminiscent of Japanese packaging. The cassette, its content, and its casing promote an aesthetic of hidden details, the invisible everyday, and silence.
As a witness to yesterday and tomorrow, the magnetic tape, once played, anchors us in this materiality of time: that of the sculpture, its creation, and the moments spent in Japan, the starting point of the artists' project.
• 2 PM - 8 PM | Alfredo Barsuglia
Virginia(2024) is a fabric architecture, produced directly by artist Alfredo Barsuglia, installed on the façade of the main Bridderhaus building. The work, whose aesthetic is reminiscent of children's playhouses, ironically evokes the economic and demographic overdevelopment of the city of Bologna, some of whose dwellings have been created between two floors of the same building to meet the demand for housing.
Omega (2024) consists of a series of concrete houses, on the scale of a doll's model, whose unique, private character is revealed by the presence of objects and traces of human presence (decoration, light, smoke). The visitor's gaze is invited to enter the intimate sphere of these inhabitants.
• 2 PM - 08:00 PM | Assan Smati
Through sculpture and painting, Assan Smati explores artistic concerns ranging from dialogue with the artists he admires to resonance with global events that affect him—even though, paradoxically, the starting point remains abstraction. His works frequently take on figurative forms, blending observation and imagination. On the occasion of this event, the artist opens the doors of his studio just as he left it. He offers visitors an immersive experience through portraits created during his residency at Bridderhaus—works in constant evolution that, modified and adjusted, capture a specific moment of their creation for the event.
• 2 PM - 08:00 PM | Marta Dyachenko
In her work, Marta Dyachenko explores the relationships between the historical past of architecture and the socio-political present of our societies. Her residency at Bridderhaus will lead to an extension of her work at Konschthal Esch in 2026. This studio visit offers a unique insight into an artistic exploration in Esch-sur-Alzette— a glimpse of a "work in progress" that will form the foundation of a new project.
• 7 PM – 7:30 PM | HAPPENING | Jubel | Tessy Bauer
Jubel brings together three distinct elements. First, a performance featuring two people wearing performative objects while serving small bites to the audience. Followed by a sound installation entitled Unexistable Orchestra with Special Guest, created by Jean-Paul Domb in collaboration with Tessy Bauer. Finally, performative objects are distributed to visitors, allowing them to collectively appropriate the space.
During this Happening, let yourself be served by Gabrielle Weissen and Clio Van Aerde, who will wear the Colcoquettes, white collars designed by the artist from Belgian fries cones. The wearer's head, highlighted by these collars, appears to detach from the body, creating the impression of a trophy.
