Angela Fette
Angela Fette has been working as a freelance artist since 2003 and is based in Düsseldorf. She studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach, the Städelschule Frankfurt, Parsons School of Design in New York, and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
Starting from painting, her practice encompasses a wide range of media, including conceptual painting, performance (costume, poetry, music and sound), and cardboard sculptures, which come together to form a multifaceted artistic cosmos. Her work includes large-scale, context- and architecture-related wall works, as well as idiosyncratic performances that combine sound, readings and ritualistic actions with proto-avant-garde costumes and helmets. A poetic text, sometimes taking the form of a parable, often serves as the starting point for entire series of works, from which music and ideas for costumes may also emerge.
She is currently working on a new series of paintings in which monolithic motifs appear to wobble, vibrate, dance or literally fall out of the frame. They function as allegories for the upheavals of the contemporary world, in which fake news and mass gaslighting create uncertainty and disorientation. At the same time, and somewhat ambivalently, this movement also suggests a process in which familiar certainties, perspectives and values have to be rearranged and reconsidered.
Since 2021, Angela Fette has hosted a salon called Eyes Wide Shut in her studio. The salon provides a space for discussing topics that, from the perspective of artists, often have little room within institutional discourse. Its focus lies on the position of art and artists within society, as well as on aesthetic and philosophical questions.
Angela Fette writes and publishes texts on art-political and philosophical subjects. Her work has received recognition through numerous grants and scholarships and has been exhibited nationally and internationally in institutions. She also teaches at HBK Essen.
