Johanna Piesniewski
Johanna Piesniewski's work on the picture began anew when she realised that she was not fixed on landscape or architecture. From her earlier paintings, only the horizon remained — a line, an orientation, a point of reference. After a few years of pause, an inner limitation fell away.
A painting always emerges for her within a few hours and then remains as it is. The German artist always begins with the same line, a top and a bottom, and with a question that usually answers itself only in the process of painting: What do the forms look like in this colour space? How much narrative, how much movement does she give, and what remains open? She paints quickly, and the paintings leave the studio just as quickly. In this way, the ego has little space during the act of painting.
For the past two years, Piesniewski has been working from one painting to the next. In a way, the paintings are autobiographical for her — a resonance of her inner states. Painting is both filter and expression at the same time.
During her time at Bridderhaus, she wants to continue developing this language, remaining open to a new environment, impressions, moods, and atmospheres. The possibility of working in larger spaces and formats is a tremendous gift. She is very excited about the new works that will emerge on site.
